We’re celebrating three years of Genesis Coffee - Happy 3 Year Anniversary! It’s incredible to reflect on all the changes and growth we've experienced in such a brief time. Genesis Coffee began its journey in 2015 with our charming little red coffee trailer. We bought the trailer to learn the ropes of coffee, test whether my husband and I could truly collaborate without any paperwork, and discover our passion for coffee. Although the red trailer operated for just one year, it became clear to us that coffee was our future.
Fast forward to 2021, we decided to venture into coffee roasting. With no prior experience, we took the leap and ordered a small roaster named Uno. Originally expected to take over three months to arrive, Uno surprised us by being ready in just three weeks. It was a whirlwind trying to prepare the garage for her arrival! We took a class to understand the basics of roasting (which turned out to be more chaotic than educational), but I learned how to operate the machine and grasp some fundamental controls. I had visions of accidentally setting the garage ablaze with my shiny new roaster!
We initially planned to launch Genesis in December 2021, but both of us had COVID, losing our sense of taste and smell, which made roasting rather difficult. Consequently, we postponed our launch to February 2022. At that time, we had no idea if this endeavor would be just an expensive hobby or transform into the business we imagined. Our first farmers market in Placerville was in May, and I was filled with imposter syndrome. I was incredibly nervous, having only roasted for a few months without formal training—just a mix of YouTube tutorials and trial and error. The first market was a whirlwind, but we received fantastic feedback from our customers, helping us settle into the season.
Fast forward 18 months, we began searching for a commercial space and funding. We secured financing in October 2023 and signed our lease that same month. What I thought would be a quick transition into the new space turned into a lengthy waiting game for permits and inspections. We were doing something a bit unconventional, and not many in the county could grasp how to classify us. Once it was established that we were solely a roasting facility and not a café, things started to progress more smoothly. A huge thanks to Angie at Mill City Roasters for being my advocate and guiding me through the county requirements—she truly was a sanity saver!
We officially opened our commercial roastery in Shingle Springs in September 2024. The launch was quiet as we were busy catching up, taking a breather from garage roasting, where I was working 5-7 days a week for 8-10 hours each day. It was exhausting! With our soft launch, we managed to meet demand and finally catch our breath. Just in time for the holidays, we set new roasting records for Genesis! We also launched our first pop-up event, unsure of what to expect, and it completely wiped us out! Kyle had to make an emergency run to Oakland that Wednesday because we ran out of beans!
As we step into our third year, we’re excited to settle into our commercial space, provide experiences to educate people about the coffee world, and continue building our community. We certainly wouldn’t be here without everyone’s support, sharing, and encouragement. We eagerly anticipate what lies ahead and where this coffee adventure will take us!
A heartfelt thank you to all our original customers for providing feedback on our early, unique coffee offerings and for becoming loyal subscribers. We also extend our gratitude to all the new customers who join us with each fundraiser, ad, or roastery pop-up. We can't wait to meet you, get to know you, and welcome you to the Genesis tribe!
Happy Three Years of Genesis Coffee!
Cheers!
